The Rotary Clubs’ Young Musician of the Year event has
become an established part of the local music calendar, and each year sees
students from more Bedfordshire schools taking part.
The Bedford round is uniquely privileged to be held in association with the
Philharmonia Orchestra. Entrants in past years have enjoyed taking part in
the concerts and learning with the Philharmonia.
Entry is open to soloists under 18 on 31st August 2009 attending schools
or colleges in Bedfordshire. There is no entry fee.
There are three age groups; Junior (6 – 10); Intermediate (11 – 13); and
Senior (14 – 18). Heats will be held at Newnham Middle School, Polhill
Avenue, Bedford. Commencing at 7.30p.m. on the 26th November and 3 December
2009, with the local finals booked for 21 January 2010 at Bedford Modern
School.
Entrants will be expected to perform for a maximum of five minutes in the
heats. It is the responsibility of entrants to provide any accompanist they
may require. Finalists will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces not
exceeding a total time of 8 minutes. Some performers may be invited to take
part in the Rotary District finals in March.
Certificates will be awarded to all entrants in the heats and the finals as
well as prizes for the first three places in each age group in the final.
The winners of the intermediate and senior categories may be invited to
spend a day with the Philharmonia Orchestra as part of the prize.
Entries for the Rotary Young Musician of the Year 2009 close on 12th
November 2009.
